About

Setting

The premise of Guards! places the players in the shoes of the town guard. It is their duty to uphold the law against thieves, low-lives, neer-do-wells, and any other evil that seeks to corrupt the people. The players must find a balance between their duty to the law, and their duty to stop an unforeseen evil that approaches.

The sacrifices that the players choose to make will alter the game's course. Do they abandon their post to search for clues, or perhaps in the process of stopping a mugging in the street they miss the evil sneaking in the gates? It is up to the players to decide what they will risk, and how they will risk it.

One of the players takes the mantle of authority, possibly as the sergeant of a squad, or commander of the whole guard. That player is given the power to give orders (which may or may not be obeyed), controls greater respect and resources, and even has the ear of the leader of the town. Of course, with the power comes a greater level of responsibility - and accountability.

System

Guards! is a Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition campaign run by Anthony Edmonds No special rules, house rules, or source books were used.

Guards! The Watchmen Encounter

Setting

Nesting along the ridges of Mount Vulcanus, lies the town and castle of Enlil. Standing at over one-hundred and fifty years old, the Lionheart family have held Enlil for generations, against war, peace and feud alike. Of course, ruling such a large town comes with its own requirements - a solid force of town guards to protect and serve the crown being one of them.

This is where you, the player, step in. As a member of the town guards, it is your duty to uphold and protect against those who would break the laws. Your training? Adequate. The risks? Mediocre. The pay? Depends how corrupt you are. You exist to serve, and you serve to continue existing.

Everything is fairly normal for you. Pickpockets, drunkards, thieves... but only days after strange hooded cultists begin showing up at the town gate, things begin to unsettle. The people start becoming restless and unhappy, reports of assaults and robberies begin flowing in - and to top things off, Mt. Vulcanus begins to shake.

Sounds like a job for the town guard.

Restrictions

You are all level one characters of whatever class you wish - the town guard is made up of all the skill sets you can imagine. With only the most basic equipment to hand (you start unequipped with 100gp to spend) it is your duty to uncover the source of this unrest, and put an end to it... though that isn't to say there won't be temptation to stray from the path...

Any exotic races or classes must be justified, especially those that are inherently seen as evil.

Guards! The Traveller Encounter

This game has not yet been run. See Proposed Games for more.

Setting

Buried deep beneath the sands of the Lonely Desert, nestled in the shadow of the mountain, lies the town of Adiiya. Known as the 'Market of the Desert', Adiiya is a huge trading stop between two nations. Travellers, Pilgrims, and Merchants of all callings are drawn to the markets, in search of the rare and beautiful.

With such cultural diversity, the town guards must be stalwart in their duty. Thieves, scoundrels, and neer-do-wells alike seek to taint Adiiya with their greed and evil. As officers of the town guard it is your duty and honour to protect the people and uphold the law.

How you choose to do so is entirely up to you. Is the peace kept by zealous attention, or letting the evil you know kill the evil you don't. Perhaps money speaks louder than words...

While this game shares the same setting and idea as 'The Watchmen Encounter', this game is not a continuation. This game takes place in the same universe, at the same time.

You are high ranking officers, but you are still very much at a 'human' level of power. You will be free to uphold or dismiss the law in whatever way you deem fit, though you do have superiors and public approval to think of. One of the characters will be assigned as the chief of the town guards. Absolute power, and all that.

Restrictions

More exotic races and classes will need a good reason, especially those considered evil by most people.

Characters from the previous game can't return, as they are currently tied up doing something about a floating castle in a volcano. Knowledge of the previous campaign is not required or expected.

You will be playing third level characters of your choice, stationed within the town guard.
